Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you currently have a dedicated status with another accredited association, you may use it to apply for a Dedicated Status with NARFO:
We will issue you with a dedicated status beased on the information supplied as stated below.
- Letter of good standing from your association
- Proof of dedicated status
- Completed online application from your profile area
- Acceptance of the Dedicated Status Declaration
- The application is subject to approval based on your motivation
In Person Assessment
We have recognised training providers for those who are in need of a classroom style learning experience and supervised practical assessment. Enquire with one of our partners to assist with in person assessments
Please ensure the following:
- The official results from the service provider must be uploaded when completing the online application form.
- The results of the practical and theoretical assessment must be clearly stated in this report
- The service providers contact details must be clearly stated
- The application is subject to approval and verification
Online assessment
The theoretical assessment for the dedicated sport shooter is based on the knowledge and understanding of the following topics:
The following topics to understand are:
- Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000
- Basic Firearm Safety
- Shooting Range Rules
- Firearm Parts, Mechanics and Cartridges
- Firearm Maintenance
The Process:
- These assessments can be taken online from your courses section in your profile area:
- A minimum of 60% must be achieved to pass the assessment
- You may study any of the topics in your own time before taking the assessment using any of your own reading material or those supplied online.
- Once you start the assessment, you can choose one topic at a time.
- Once you have completed the assessment, you can print the completion certificate for your records
- You still need to follow the process of applying for dedicated status using the online application from the profile area.
Practical assessment
The practical assessment target (DS Assessment Target) must be used for this exercise. The Target can be downloaded from the documents tab in the profile area . The target must be set up according to rules and the table below. See last column for the applicable dedicated status.
If a Rifle or Handgun is used for the assessment, you are required to shoot 5 shots in your own time.
If the assessment is done using a shotgun, any of the known shotgun shooting events can be used (trap, skeet, sporting, compact sporting or steel challenge for dedicated Hunter status). In a case this, a photo or copy of the scorecard needs to be uploaded in the activity section as “Practical Assessment.
A minimum of 60% must be achieved as a pass mark for any of the assessment types
For any of the rifle assessments, centre fire and rim fire, the exercise is shot from a shooting bench and only a front rest may be used. No back rests are allowed
All the handgun assessments must be done from the standing position with no support except for a hunting handgun where a rest is allowed
Shotgun assessments positions are done as per the rules of the specific shotgun discipline.
All assessments should be done on a formal public shooting range.
Targets must be signed by the member and the range officer.
