Youth day Training

What can be better than to celebrate your birthday with a few friends on the shooting range.

This is exactly what this junior did.

NARFO believes in investing in the youth and introducing new members to the shooting sports. Getting a bunch of juniors on the range for the first time is a good way of doing this. Providing a solid introduction of firearms to juniors sets the stage for further growth and education in the shooting sports. Most of the youth of today’s first experience with firearms is normally through some video game. This does not provide the reality and proper introduction on the safe handling of a firearm. Being on a shooting range handling the real thing instils a sense of responsibility and awareness. This cannot be replaced by a virtual encounter.

Danre Moolman decided that for his 10th birthday, he wanted to go to a shooting range and have fun with his friends.

He has never handled a firearm before and with the assistance of Juanita Scheffer of ShootingScheffers and NARFO, we went to visit the range a few times before the big day. Introducing him to the basics of firearm safety, how to aim and fire a few shots with a 22LR.

You could sense the excitement when those shots hit the steel plates after sighting in.

The big day arrived and with the assistance of the Durbanville Shooting Range team and NARFO members, under the leadership of Morne Fouche and his team, Johan Joubert, Lizel Joubert and two seasoned juniors, Schalk Fouche and Hannes Joubert, the day was set to begin.

These juniors had a blast. Basic training was given and the importance of firearm safety when handling any firearm. The smiles were big and each of them waited in anticipation for their turn to fire some shots.

After the introduction, they teamed up for some fun shooting exercise and a hint of competition was introduced.

Each of the juniors received a cap with the birthday boy’s name on sponsored by the Durbanville Shooting club. The excitement could not be contained. These guys were so enthusiastic and eager. I can see that we will see more of them on the range and a few parents that will be visiting a gun shop soon to purchase that first .22 rifle.

We only received positive feedback from all the participants and parents.
